I’m happy they are pleased with the finished product, proud we were able to get it delivered in a tight deadline, and looking forward to working with them again in the future!

Yesterday, I received an email from my pal Britta Burrus, designer extraordinaire. I had referred her latest client to her, Wi-Fi Sensors, for some website work and they needed a promotional video asap for a conference – by Monday, to be exact. They wanted to show off their main facility and production line here in Kirksville. After some back-and-forth about the nature of the video, I decided I could squeeze it in.

So today’s intense 2 hour shoot went well. As always, I tried to get even more coverage than I thought I needed. The most intensive shot was a shot I conceived of an item going down the assembly line, from the perspective of a camera traveling behind it. It took more coordination than you would think, but I’m happy to say that we finally got it in three takes – probably about 20 minutes of time for that shot alone.

I’ll be hitting the editing room this Saturday to get this thing done. When it’s done, and I have the okay, I will post it here.

I just finished a quickie promo video for The Oskar, a Russian pop superstar that is performing here in Kirksville:

This was a lot of fun and I hope the concert turns out well. This guy is fairly controversial but a pretty big name in music in Russia a few years ago – just before he released a controversial song and video that protested Russia’s role in Chechnya. He is flamboyantly bisexual and supposedly puts on quite a show. Should be quite a party for this small town.

Well, my current output may not be as high as it used to be, but I do manage to get involved in some interesting projects occasionally. The latest is a series of ads for Representative Rebecca McClanahan, who is up for re-election to the Missouri House. Here’s the first Ad we did:

Roots
Reminiscent of the “it’s morning in America” ads of the Reagan era.

Brenda Higgins ad
This is a direct response to some literature slung by the opposing candidate that Rebecca “celebrates abortion,” which is rather absurd, as a testimonial from her coworker and friend.

Pull the Plug
After some even nastier television, radio ads and brochures from her opponent, Rebecca decided again to restate her commitment to a positive campaign and her record of getting things done.

For what it’s worth, I’m very impressed that she decided to keep it clean. She could’ve easily slung dirt right back at her opponent, but she rose above that to continue to campaign on her own merits. That’s why I’ll be voting for Rebecca McClanahan next week.

Your vid guy, Todd Kuhns

No big projects planned for the immediate future. The one project we did have going – a series of historical podcasts on odd, unusual and overlooked bits of Northeast Missouri legends and lore – went on hold a couple months ago while I work on a new venture.

Oh, and I got elected to the Kirksville City Council, which has been refocusing my energies for the time being.

However, it looks like my good buddy Matt Eppright (“Matthew James” for those who pay attention to the credits) just wrapped on another short, Finals Week. I’m looking forward to seeing this one as I do all his stuff.

I finished my second video for the Alpha Family Development Center organization. This was my first foray into green screen territory, which I used to add more interesting animated backgrounds to the board member interviews. Even after preliminary tests, I was a little nervous that it could be pulled off successfully in DV, without compression artifacts affecting the edges. However, all it took was a few filters and a LOT of tweaking and they turned out pretty well, I thought. Check out a high-quality version for yourself:

The PSA is going to show for the next few months on the local ABC affiliate, KTVO.

This weekend, I’m heading down to St. Louis to shoot another promotional video for the Alpha Family Development Center. It’s been a year since I did the last one, and they’ve since gotten a lot more funding and a place. Since their needs have changed significantly, they’ve asked me back to shoot another promo video. This time, I’ll be doing some greenscreen work with the interviews. I’ll let you know how it goes.

After a well-received run with Dracula, I decided to try out for the next production, The Lion in Winter. It’s a terrific play based on a terrific movie that won Katherine Hepburn an Oscar for Best Actress. I’ll be playing the part of Geoffrey, the nastiest schemer of the three sons. Thankfully, it’s a much smaller role than Van Helsing, which means the rehearsal schedule is more compatible with my wife.

I’ve posted some pics here of the Dracula production back in October. The rather elaborate set was built in a very large, round barn about 2 miles outside of Kirksville. The owner of the barn hosts large events there year-round, such as plays, concerts and a notorious annual blues festival that packs as many as 600 people in the place at once. It made for chilly rehearsals, but he does heat the barn for the performances. He set up large circular tables and chairs in front of the stage for the audience. He also owns a popular italian restaurant in town and they catered the dinner-theater menu, as well as food for the cast and crew.

The Round Barn turned out to be the perfect atmosphere for a creepy Halloween play. The ceiling is immense, and the venue allowed us complete freedom to screw things into the walls, floors, etc. Keith Miller, a local magician who also played the part of the attendant, designed several magical moments for the play. At one point when he is cornered, Dracula disappeared completely from the front edge of the stage, only to reappear later in a sealed coffin that had been sitting amidst the audience since the beginning. It went over very well and was a blast to perform.

That’s me with the beard in the chair on the left.

In a Variety article today, George Lucas threw us the shocker of all shockers: That Lucasfilm Ltd is getting out of the movie business. Sort of.

Basically, he’s saying that studios that spend $200 million on huge, "tent-pole" franchises are barking up the wrong tree. For the same amount of money, one could make "50-60 two hour movies" that are downloadable and pay-per-view. Sure, his filmmaking abilities may have shown their limitations with the last three in the Star Wars franchise, but the guy has obviously been on the cutting edge of technology and has the pulse of the moviegoing public more or less figured out from a business standpoint. This is the guy who practically defined the tent-pole franchise film.

This is the sort of thinking that has kept my enthusiasm for starting a new project at bay for the last year. I’ve been doing a lot of reading, a lot of speculating, and a lot of dreaming about how we can possibly make money from our next film. The Artists’ Essentials series and, to a smaller extent, the Weekend Warlords documentary were actually financially successful for us, and in both cases there’s one reason for that: we had a clearly defined audience in both cases, and we catered to that audience. That means that, going into the project, we knew, without a doubt, that we would be able to sell it. Of course, we had no idea how much we would make, but we knew how to sell it and who would buy it.

I’m not ready to start another project until we can do this again. But there’s another piece to the puzzle. It’s easy to find a buyer for a set of instructional videos. And it’s easy to sell a documentary to the people you made the documentary about. I do that sort of stuff all the time with my wedding videos. But when talking about narrative film, it became obvious to me pretty quickly that two additional things would need to be considered alongside the audience: medium and venue.

It is validating to see that Lucas is coming to some of the same conclusions that I’ve been considering. In analyzing my own media consumption habits and those of my friends around me, as well as the trends in the technological world and what’s hitting the news, it seems like Americans are going crazy over short, satisfying, bite-sized bits of entertainment that they can pill-pop throughout their day. I know I am.

Consider this: What is the hottest trend in DVD sales right now? Television shows, old and new. My wife and I don’t get to devote a lot of time to leisure nowadays, but we love throwing in an episode of The Simpsons before dinner. There’s much less committment there than sitting down to a 2-hour opus, although it’s still not as satisfying or edifying. I think shows like Lost and 24 are popular because they satisfy both desires — the desire for a rich, complex story and the desire for short bursts of it. Add the anticipation in between episodes — the internet culture of analysis, speculation and discussion on the plot and characters — and you’re seeing a picture of what Lucas is talking about.

Technology is only making this easier and more appealing. The iPod does video now. Not only that, but it’s also putting the power of filmmaking into the hands of more people. We’re already seeing a deluge of quantity, and sometimes the quality of the micro-budget productions are better than the big boys’ overblown extravaganza. As an audience, I think we’ll naturally be more inclined to wade through this stuff and take risks if the prices are low and the time committments are small. Do me a favor and check out Red vs. Blue if you want to see what I’m talking about. The current system, in which a relatively small group of people make boatloads of money putting out relatively little product, is starting to look like an old bear. Wouldn’t it be better for lots of people to make a comfortable living producing art that speaks to our needs? I don’t want to sound overly excited, but the time is now.

Does this mean the death of cinema? I’m not prepared to make that claim. But it may mean the transformation of the cinema experience into something more immersive. James Cameron and a host of other directors are moving into the 3-D realm that Robert Rodriguez has been experimenting with lately. You can’t get 3D, surround-sound (and maybe a few more surprises) off your iPod or computer (yet). But it will take more than good movies to plant butts into theater seats — we’ll have to radically transform the moviegoing experience to pull people away from their comfortable living rooms, which are turning more and more into theaters each year.

None of this stuff is new or original to me. It’s an amalgamation of the stuff I’ve been reading and observing over the last couple years. But if it strikes a chord with a fellow filmmaker, I’d love to hear your comments below…
